Vegan benefits for the Environment: a Plant-Based Future?
October 05, 2020 by Samuel Anthony
Veganism, and plant-based diets, are regarded for their potential benefits for our environment. There are many reasons to go plant-based and the environment requires that we act!
Here's everything you need to know about veganism and the environment, as well as the many benefits of plant based in securing a future for our planet...
Agriculture: while we keep buying, our environment faces problems
We are causing a global environmental catastrophe, yet the vastly detrimental agriculture and industrial farming of live-stock still continues.
According to the Vegan Society, producing 1kg of beef consumes 15,500 litres of water, compared with just 250 for 1kg of potatoes.
While we keep buying, it is unlikely to be stopped.
A plant-based diet may be the single biggest move you can make in ensuring a protected future for our planet.
The vast majority of scientists accept the idea that we are facing unprecedented changes to our planet's environment.
According to National-Geographic: '...glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, cloud forests are dying, and wildlife is scrambling.'
To protect Earth's future, the future of the next generations, and most importantly the various life and species also native to our home, we must act now.
A vegan diet is one of the most impactful ways we can achieve change - particularly in regard to our personal carbon footprint.
Oxford: 'plant-based diets reduce food’s emissions by up to 73%'
The University of Oxford finds, 'plant-based diets reduce food’s emissions by up to 73%' and secondly that if plant-based diets were commonly followed we would require 76% less farmland.
Therefore, adapting our diet in small ways towards a fully plant-based diet can significantly improve an individual's carbon footprint.
